My first steps in Saudi Arabia were like crossing a border between worlds. As a woman raised in the European Christian tradition, I was always curious about gaining a deeper understanding of a culture that, at first glance, seemed so different from my own.

Saudi Arabia is a fascinating geopolitical phenomenon – an absolute monarchy that, within just a few decades, transformed from a land of desert tribes to a global economic player. King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, the current ruler, has repeatedly emphasized the transformative role of his state, saying: „Our future lies in diversification, innovation, and opening up to the world.”

The industrial revolution in the kingdom is not just about oil extraction, but strategic investments in modern technologies. The Vision 2030 program, initiated by the crown prince, Mohammed bin Salman, aims for a radical economic transformation. The goal? To become independent from oil exports and create a multi-sector, innovative economy.

As a woman, I also observe profound social changes. Just a decade ago, women had drastically limited rights; today, they can drive, travel without a guardian’s consent, and work in many professions. This is a revolution comparable to European women’s rights struggles in the 20th century.
Religion – Islam – remains the foundation of social life, much like Christianity in Europe. Both are monotheistic religions, though different in details, based on common values: love, respect, and mutual care.

Quoting King Salman: „Our aim is to build a productive, dynamic society and a competitive economy that offers opportunities to all citizens.” These words sound like a true declaration of transformation.

Prospects for the coming years? Investments in renewable energy, mega-projects like NEOM – a futuristic city-region that is set to become a symbol of modernity. A transformation from a conservative oil kingdom to a center of innovation and technology.

Looking from my European perspective, Saudi Arabia is no longer just an exotic, closed world. It is a dynamically changing society that balances between tradition and modernity, between respect for heritage and a bold vision of the future.
